What are the main sources of information about the history of Pawtucket?
Answer:
There are several current general sources of information for the
general reader. The first is A History of Pawtucket 1635-1986, Edited
by Susan M. Boucher published by Pawtucket Public Library and reprinted
as a second edition in 1987. This is a general work with the emphasis
on the 20 th century. For a work that describes the history and
architecture of Pawtucket, we would recommend the Statewide Historical
Preservation Report P-PA-2, Pawtucket, Rhode Island published by
the Rhode Island Historical Preservation Commission,) October 1978.
Reprinted in 1989. Copies can be purchased from the Preservation
Society of Pawtucket for $15.00 mailing included. For a more detailed
look a early Pawtucket we would recommend; History of Pawtucket,
Rhode Island – Reminiscences of the Reverend David Benedict
– Origins of Pawtucket, East Side. Spaulding House Library,
1886. The book also has an annotated index. The Annotated Index
– Reminiscences and New Series of Rev. David Benedict. Spaulding
House Library 1984.
I am interested in Pawtucket genealogy. What sources can you recommend?
Answer: There is a series of books about Pawtucket genealogy beginning with; Pawtucket Gazette and Chronicle, Marriages and Deaths, R.I. and Vicinity Vol. I 1825-1834, Spaulding House Library, 1988. Secondly, Pawtucket, Rhode Island & Vicinity Marriages and Deaths, Vol. 2, 1835, 1844. and thirdly, a Vol. 3 covering from 1845 to 1854. These publications were compiled by Elizabeth Johnson and James Lucas Wheaton IV for the Spaulding House Library.
How old is my house in Pawtucket?
Answer:
You can do the research yourself at the Tax Assessor’s office
and obtain the chain of title page for your lot and plat. Then you
would have to look at the deed and mortgage sale books in the City
Clerk’s records section. You can also apply for a Society
Marker for $25.00 and the Society will provide you with the
same information.
